Brenda Farquharson Schell

My name is Brenda Farquharson Schell and it is an honour for me to reflect on the woman June was and how she impacted my life in such significant ways..... I met June Hay one day early summer 1981. I had been searching for a place to live prior to starting Conestoga College in September of that year. It was the end of a very frustrating day of house hunting and my list had only two more potential listings. My Mom and I drove up to 827 Doon Village Road. We were welcomed with open arms by a smiling woman. My search for a home away from home ended that day. It was the beginning of a wonderful three year stay with the Hay family as a boarder in their home. I was made feel a part of the family from the very beginning. Life became routine with me attending Conestoga but always coming home to my beautiful room, delicious meals, great conversations with Mr. and Mrs. Hay and singing or watching television with Kathy. I remember the many times they tried to introduce me to one of the many card games they enjoyed. I'm afraid I was not very good with card games! Their home was always so full of love and laughter. I remember the big smiles as Mom Hay prepared for Christmas or trips. She loved to have her family around. She was so proud of all of you and loved to share all your successes and adventures with me. I truly felt an extension of your family during my college years. After graduation, I kept in touch and was saddened to hear when Earl died. In 1990 Mom Hay met my husband Gerard and we continued our friendship. We followed Mom Hay's move from Kitchener to live with daughter Marilyn in Ottawa and will always remember her excited phone call when she called to let us know she had met and fallen in love with Byron. She was so proud to introduce us to him when they visited our home in Amherstview, near Kingston. As years passed, it was wonderful to hear about her life and her children and grandchildren whether at her trailer near Cherry Valley or Florida or her home in New Hamburg. She was always so generous with her unconditional love, her hospitality and her thoughtfulness during our visits whether in person or via telephone. As our lives got busier with our children and business we saw each other less and less, but we would always catch up where we left off with the last conversation. I feel very badly we had not seen each other in person for some time. Mom Hay just loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest with her wonderful sense of humour. Her children were her world and I know each and everyone of you feel her loss tremendously. Always remember she loved you all very much and you made her life so very special. I feel blessed to have known all of you and consider June as my second Mom. She will be deeply missed. With much love and affection, Brenda Farquharson Schell
