Born and raised in Kitchener, Ed attended Sacred Heart Elementary and St. Jerome's High School.  Ed received his Funeral Directors Certificate in 1957 from the Banting Institute, then started in funeral service with the Gruhn Funeral Home in 1955, where he was employed until 1967.  Along with a partner, Ed purchased the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, which they owned and operated until they sold their interests in the funeral home to a corporation in 1989. For 10 years following the sale, Ed managed the home for the corporation, then left in 1999.  The home continues under corporate ownership.  During his years in funeral services, Ed served as President of the Central Ontario Funeral Directors Association.

In 1972, Ed joined the Kitchener Rotary Club, and in 1981 he transferred to the new Kitchener-Westmount Rotary, where he served as President from 1988 – 1989.  He continues as a member and presently serves on the membership committee.  Presently, Ed is a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Probus Club and the publisher of the monthly newsletter, “Pro-Buzz”.  He is also a member of the Kitchener Knights of Columbus Council #1504 and the Senior Knights of Columbus group.   Ed is a director with RAISE, where he serves on the supportive housing, nominating committee, strategic planning committee and chairs the awards committee.  His other active memberships include the Kitchener-Waterloo Business Men’s Club, Royal Canadian Legion, Polish Br. 412, the Dom Polski 2000 and the Chicopee Ski Club.  Ed is a past board member of Family and Children Services and a past member of the Fund Raising Committee of St Jerome’s College (University).

Ed is married to the former Donna Scheels, who was a long-time secretary at St. Anne’s School. They attend St. Anne’s Church where Ed is a Eucharistic Minister.  Donna is an active member of the Women’s Probus Club of Kitchener, the Kitchener-Waterloo Garden Club, and an avid bridge player.  Ed and Donna have two daughters, Susan and Wendy.  Susan is married to Jonathan Dent and have four wonderful children; Ed & Donna are proud grandparents of Mac, Mike, Elissa and Tessa.  Their family is active in their church at Waterloo Mennonite Bretheran.  Wendy is married to Graham White; both she and Graham live in Toronto and are teachers with the York Board.
