Obituary for Rick Cooper

Rick Cooper
Rick Cooper
May 5, 1945 ~ November 24, 2019

Fredrick (“Rick”) Cooper, 74, of Kitchener, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 24, 2019. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 5, 1945, to Ethel and Fredrick Cooper. He is survived by his wife, Carmen (Leclerc) of 56 years and his two sons, Barry and his wife, Trina, of Stratford and Jim and his partner, Leslie, of Mitchell and extended family. Loving grandfather to Ann-Marie (Dan), Tian, Lynae (Ben) Dayton and James. Predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Fredrick Cooper, sister Ethel Martin (Cooper), step-brother, James Fredrick Cooper.

Rick lived a full life and will be fondly remembered for his charm, quick wit, gruffness and playful demeanour. His personality was bigger than life and he was always good for a laugh and no matter where he was or who he was with; he knew what to say to make you smile. He was a private person and his family knew him as gentle giant who would do anything for them. Rick was known for his memorable expressions (even if they were inappropriate) and nicknames for others.

He worked in the amusement coin-op industry for over 50 years until his retirement in 2015. He had a passion for life and enjoyed fishing, hunting, billiards, horse racing, cars, perfecting his lawn and counting coin. In his youth, Rick was an avid soap box derby racer and played for the Chatham Maroons Junior Hockey Team. Family was very important to Rick, who spent much of his free time attending the various extracurricular activities that his grandchildren were involved in. He cherished time spent with family and friends and was always open to a fishing trip “up north”. He had a large collection of movies and old television shows and was a game show wiz. He enjoyed sitting outside in his favourite chair with his schnauzers.

We will miss Rick’s witty sense of humor, nicknames and voice of reason in our lives as we live on, but find comfort knowing that he has been released from the cruel grip of age and infirmity.

In keeping with Rick’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private “Celebration of Life” will be held at a future date. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice through Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8567, www.henrywalser.com
