Obituary for
Wanda L Gretzinger (Manke)
Gretzinger, Wanda (Manke):
Wanda Gretzinger passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, June 7th, 2018. Born Wanda Manke in Poland in 1933 to Karl and Amanda Manke the third child in a family of four children. She spent many of her formative years on the family farm during the war years and later in refugee camps in Germany as her family waited to emigrate to Canada. She met and married Alexander Gretzinger in 1953 and they had 55 wonderful years together. They were blessed with 3 children, Harold (Marie Blunt), Marvin (Mindy) and Marlene. Predeceased by her parents, husband Alex and daughter Marlene, she also leaves to mourn, her surviving sister Sophie Hoffman and grandchildren Taucha (Daniel) Post, Brett, Bethany and Cole (Emma) Gretzinger and Lindsay and Derick Haywood all of Kitchener.
Wanda's life was extremely full with her faith, family and food. She was a lifelong member of the Ottawa Street Mennonite Brethren Church and could be counted on to organize a full banquet for 100 at short notice. She shunned the spotlight and enjoyed working in the background in the kitchen, arranging flowers or visiting the sick and shut-ins with her husband. She would drop off flowers or baking to anyone who needed cheering up. She helped at Kids Klub and VBS and anywhere anybody needed to be fed.
Her cooking, baking and entertaining skills were legendary and she was happiest entertaining her family and friends at home. It was impossible to leave Wanda's home hungry. She lived for her family and loved and prayed for them constantly. A mother's love is one of the most powerful forces on earth and Wanda was a force.
Wanda's family will receive relatives and friends from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2018 and on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 from 10 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467 where the funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon to follow the service. Interment at Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener, following the luncheon.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), 50 Kent Ave #203, Kitchener, ON N2G 3R1 (cards available at the funeral home).
