Obituary for Howard Rowe Vardy

Vardy, Howard R. (June 3, 1925 - May 15, 2019)

Howard passed away peacefully at Trinity Village on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 in his 94th year. Predeceased by his beloved wives Karmian Vardy (nee Kent) on February 4, 1988 and Kathryn Lippert on January 28, 2004. Will be lovingly remembered by his children: Kevin and Michele Vardy, Karleen and Scott Waters, Kyle Vardy, and Kim and Dave Wilson. Also fondly remembered by his 7 grandchildren: Jakob, Dylan, Claire, Eric, Kelly, Sam and Olivia. Howard graduated from McMaster University in 1947 with a degree in mathematics and obtained his Bachelor of Education from the Ontario College of Education in 1948. He began his teaching career in 1948 at Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School where he taught math. In 1956 he joined the inaugural staff at Eastwood Collegiate. While at Eastwood he taught senior level advanced math courses, was head of the math department and later became Vice Principal. Howard won a contest that took place at ECI to develop the motto for the school's coat of arms. To this day "Ex Oriente Lux" (From the East Comes Light) remains the school motto and is inscribed on their crest. Howard was a lifelong member of Trinity United Church. He was the driving force in the creation of the large stained glass memorial window that was dedicated in 1995.
Howard's family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 and from 10-10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, (519)749-8467. Funeral Service in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 11 a.m. followed by a reception. A private family interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery. A special thanks to the staff at Trinity Care Centre for their care and compassion. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Eastwood Scholarship Fund, or McMaster University - Greatest Needs In Memory of Howard Vardy (cards available at the funeral home).
