Obituary for Stanley Robert Iwan

Iwan, Dr. Stanley Robert (1930-2018)
Passed away peacefully at Hospice Wellington in Guelph, Ontario on Monday, April 2, 2018 with his son Stephen at his side.

He is survived by his children, Susan (Greg), Thomas (Kyungshin), Michael, and Stephen (Jennifer), and by his grandchildren Joshua, Brooke, Emma, Max, Casimir, and Lilly. He is also survived by the Rider family, Margaret (Frank) Groselle, Jim (Josephine) Rider, Joe Rider, and Sherry Setchell, and the many nieces and nephews who graced his life with his beloved Millie. Stan is predeceased by his mother, Mary, his father John, and his beloved wife, Mildred Rider.

Stan graduated in 1955 from the University of Western Ontario. He interned as a general surgeon at Toronto Western Hospital before specializing in Neurosurgery, earning his certificate with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ontario in 1965. His contributions to the medical community in Kitchener-Waterloo spanned more than 50 years. In addition to practicing neurosurgery at both Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital, he was the Chief of Surgery and held various executive positions on the Medical Advisory Committee at KW Hospital, including President of Physicians. During his time at the hospital, he oversaw a significant increase in the size and requirements of the medical staff. Throughout his career Stan was a leader committed to the care and success of his peers, and his community.

Stan loved his wife, his family, and his friends. He loved to take a different route, to tour the countryside, to antique, and to listen to opera. His gift of grace under pressure, his encouragement and support, his sense of humour, his love and guidance, and the twinkle he always had in his eye will be greatly missed. Stan has left his family with a love of literature, a good quote, great food, great wine, and most of all, love for each other. He was above all a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and the last few weeks with him will be treasured by each of his children forever.

Special thanks to Tracey Schlosser, Shirley Schutt, Pat Hickman, Peggy Brightwell and the rest of the wonderful people at Hospice Wellington for their wonderful and compassionate care during Stan’s last days. Thanks also to the doctors and staff of 5 South at Grand River Hospital for their guidance, care and support.

Stan’s family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2018 and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467.
